A WORLD THAT HAS LOST ALL COLOUR-PART TWO (Diane Chartrand)

Later that day Mary told her daughter Saddie that she didn’t like the grey world and was sad.

“Mom, I know how to fix it.”

“You do. Tell me how please Saddie.”

Her four-year-old daughter went to her room and came back with a paintbrush and a circle of paints on a board. She told her mother she would paint over the grey with bright colours.

“I don’t know honey, that’s a lot of grey.”

Saddie looked around and then told her, “Okay how about I start with some of the flowers in the backyard?”

The two went out the back door. Mary showed her which ones to start with and said to call her when she finished. Mary wasn’t sure if putting paint on the flowers would work but she didn’t want to disappoint the young child from trying.

With a look of determination, Saddie started to paint the daisies yellow and some a bit of yellow with a touch of red on them. After doing all the ones near the back porch, Saddie called her mother outside to see.

“Oh Saddie, that is so beautiful, and they make me happy.”

Mary gave her daughter a giant hug. She knew this was nice, but it wouldn’t be possible to recolour the entire world with a little paint.

“Saddie maybe you can do some more tomorrow. Come inside now so we can get some lunch.”

Sadie put her paints away in her room but told her mother she would go back out and paint some other ones after she finished eating. Mary agreed as this was something that seemed to make her daughter happy.

The two sat at the table, looking sadly at the grey plates, and ate their sandwiches in silence.
